for our cub scouts blue and gold
banquet/pinewood derby i volunteered to do the cake (a decision i
regretted at about 2 in the morning as we were finishing up the cake the
night before). i found the idea to make it a scout shirt here and ran with it.
it
was a joint effort with me, emily, and our dad. he made the butter
cream icing and fondant. i made the cake (which ended up being
undercooked on my first attempt so i had to start over -- hence the 2 am
unfortunateness). then me and emily decorated it together.
tips --
roll
the fondant in two large pieces if you're not up to making one large
smooth piece to cover the whole thing (like us), then the overlap looks
just like a shirt overlaps, and cut out a small piece to lay inside the
collar circle so no one can see the overlap there.
practice
drawing the creatures for the patches, but don't worry if they look
funky cause they'll look good when you look at the cake as a whole. it's
cake gestalt.
make
a bigger cake (but not necessarily higher) if you want it to have more
details. (duh right? but i was sad when we had to leave some details off
cause there wasn't enough space.)
the
more details you can put on there the better. using a little fondant
scorer to add the shoulder, cuff, button strip, pocket seams really made
a difference.
the boys thought it was pretty awesome, so all the effort was definitely worth it in the end!
