schweizer fest

every year brett's dad and step mom head up to her home town of tell city, indiana for schweizer fest. we've been talking about going every year and it finally just happened this year. we left after work on wednesday so we got to nashville around 1. we spent thursday (our anniversary) running a few errands with brett's dad and then at the golf course. on friday we drove up to tell city (3 hours from nashville) to julie's mom's house.

i loved the feel of this small town (about 10,000 people). this is the house julie grew up at, but that water tower is fairly new. it's just so charming!

once we dropped our stuff off we headed into town (julie's mom's house is walking distance from downtown) to grab some food at caper's. the building used to be a men's suit store that julie's great grandpa (pretty sure that's it) partly owned.

this is a statue of william tell and his son in downtown. they also use that apple as their own ball drop.
the boys played in the golf tournament and julie and i ran in the 6 mile race. there were 600 runners and we both got second in our age groups! (the boys didn't fair as well in the golf tourny. they accidentally played well on the first day instead of the second so they got stuck in a tougher flight.) the run was pretty intense since the whole fourth mile was a hill! then it was cruel and the water station at the top of the hill had no cups when i ran through! the weather was perfect for running (and golfing) though, it was actually pretty chilly at times!

after the race award ceremony (which had a crazy amount of people sitting to watch), we visited julie's buffalo nickel man's booth. it's a tradition for her and her sister to sort and buy all of his nickels.

somehow i didn't take many people shots on this trip for some reason. can't believe this is my only picture of julie's mom, who everyone calls tootie (pronounced tugh-ty). i. love. her. this shot is for the newspaper to promote the schreiber family charities fund raising golf tournament (a foundation julie's family created after her sister's little boy passed away).

we walked around the booths and went to the wine tasting while the boys golfed.

i loved all the antique store booths. we need a study for brett so he can display all of the old pharmacy bottles he got.

i wanted to buy all the things.

julie's family ran a pharmacy for about 100 years in the town. these little ads were selling for $8 a pop at one of the booths. we visited the family storage unit to find brett some more pharmacy treasures and found a box full of these puppies. can't wait to frame the one i snagged. see how the phone number is 1? the store was the first place in the town to have a phone! so neat!

tell city has a little pretzel factory to make their famous pretzels. they were super hard, but super addictive.

beautiful downtown church. there was also a little carnival set up downtown.

that's the church julie grew up going to in the background. i loved going with her and her mom on sunday.

did i mention how charming tootie's house is? the "s" on the chimney and the spelled out address on the front! her backyard also has an awesome hilltop view of the ohio river and kentucky.

they took me sight seeing while the boys were golfing. we saw a dam on the ohio river, lafayette springs, and this celtic cross that a winery had carved.

ruby was more than ready to go home on sunday. she wouldn't move from that spot for thirty minutes while we packed the car.

i don't blame her for wanting to be home either. check out their new house! it's in a new neighborhood only a few minutes from their old house. it's so beautiful and it was a parade of homes home so it's got lots of bells and whistles too (like fancy rock speakers outside).

the driveway is the only drawback, but brett's dad is already a pro at backing down it.

can't wait for christmas up there! we left to drive home after we had lunch with brett's dad and got home around 11. needless to say when i was heading back to work the next day i was wishing we were still on vacation up there. so glad we got to go!
